{"id":100,"date":"2006-07-30T16:57:55","date_gmt":"2006-07-30T16:57:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennethwoods.net\/blog1\/2006\/07\/30\/schumann-and-shostakovich-just-a-year-late\/"},"modified":"2006-08-05T08:42:27","modified_gmt":"2006-08-05T08:42:27","slug":"schumann-and-shostakovich-just-a-year-late","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennethwoods.net\/blog1\/2006\/07\/30\/schumann-and-shostakovich-just-a-year-late\/","title":{"rendered":"Schumann and Shostakovich- Just a year late"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">Much as I\u2019m happy to see Shostakovich getting so much attention in his 100<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary year, I\u2019ve been a bit sad to see the 150<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the death of Robert Schumann go almost completely unnoticed, except at <a href=\"http:\/\/theovergrownpath.blogspot.com\/2006\/07\/anniversary-for-classical-musics.html\">On An Overgrown Path<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\" \/><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">I actually very lovingly set out to combine the two anniversaries into a mini-series with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surreymozartplayers.com\/\">Surrey Mozart Players<\/a>. The idea was to do back to back concerts of one symphony and one solo work by each, paired with a Beethoven overture (Beethoven being arguably the largest influence on either). The programs were going to look like this\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\" \/><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">Beethoven- Coriolan Overture\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\" \/><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">Schumann- Cello Concerto\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">Shostakovich- Chamber Symphony op 83a\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\" \/><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">Beethoven- Leonore Overture No. 3\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">Shostakovich- Poems of Maria Tsvetayeva\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">Schumann- Symphony No. 3\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\" \/><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">I actually thought the pairing was exceptionally interesting and put both of them in a fresh context. Schumann the polemicist versus Shostakovich the yurodivy, Florestan and Eusebius versus Shostakovich the Old (loyal son of the regime) and New (secret dissident), it was going to be great.
