{"id":101,"date":"2006-07-31T14:08:57","date_gmt":"2006-07-31T14:08:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennethwoods.net\/blog1\/2006\/07\/31\/fight-the-power\/"},"modified":"2006-08-05T08:41:04","modified_gmt":"2006-08-05T08:41:04","slug":"fight-the-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennethwoods.net\/blog1\/2006\/07\/31\/fight-the-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Fight the power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">Just as a follow-up to <a href=\"http:\/\/kennethwoods.net\/blog1\/2006\/07\/30\/you-pay-the-piper-and-well-call-the-tune\/\">yesterday\u2019s piece<\/a> on state funding of the arts\u2026.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\" \/><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">There are lots of conversations going on in the blogosphere, in newspapers and around the water-cooler about the so-called crisis in classical music.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\" \/><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">One central idea I have been trying to stress here and will continue to get at more often is my belief that in many, many ways the ill-health of the classical music business is a sign of the ill-health of society as a whole.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">This is not to say that we won\u2019t all benefit from innovation, reform, regeneration and new ideas. It\u2019s not to say that we shouldn\u2019t expand our repertoire, embrace new audiences, and reach out to young people. Those are all things we should be doing in good times and bad.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\" \/><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">However, I think a careful look at recent history will show that classical music\u2019s economic challenges (and that\u2019s really the issue everyone worries about) are not\u00a0brought about\u00a0because we play too much old music or to much new music or too much European music or too much whatever music. It\u2019s not because we still wear tux\u2019s or because we won\u2019t let the audience clap or cough in the middle of the concert. It\u2019s not because we start concerts at 7 or 9 or whatever. It\u2019s not because ticket prices are too high.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\" \/><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">The arts are the cultural canary in the coal mine, and there are some toxic fumes in our culture today- no wonder the birdy passed out. This is something I\u2019m sure I\u2019ll come back to many more times in more detail, but I\u2019d encourage you to think about how\u00a0the following questions-\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\" \/><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">How are arts organizations affected by regulatory changes in publishing and broadcasting that have caused most formerly locally-owned and operated radio, television and newspaper outlets to become subsidiaries of huge national conglomerates? When so much of our media content is nationally syndicated, don\u2019t local performing arts organizations get less coverage of everything that they do?<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\" \/><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">How are arts organizations affected by the erosion of educational standards in all areas, let alone by the wholesale demolition of arts education? <\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\" \/><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">How are arts organizations affected by the national governments massive general reductions in humanitarian aid over the last 25 years? Funds to help victims of a tragedy like the <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">Indian Ocean<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\"> tsunami would have come from the state in prior generations, now they\u2019ve come primarily from private foundations, foundations that used to fund arts organizations.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p \/><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\" \/><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\" \/><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\">Rather than being so introspective about what we need to do to be more like our times, perhaps we should instead become more proactive in addressing the challenges of our times.
