Brahms is a focus of the first season under Dortmund’s General Music Director Jordan de Souza. The performance of all four Brahms symphonies on April 28 and 29 complemented the Violin Concerto in the fifth Philharmonic Concert on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Dortmund Concert Hall.

And the Italian violinist Francesca Dege (pictured) offered a fresh perspective on many parts of the work. This was due both to the young musician’s preferences (she is a virtuoso who plays Paganini particularly well) and to her violin. It was made in Cremona in 1697 and, accordingly, has a less expansive, lush tone. Francesca Dege played the three movements with great Italian elegance; for the cadenza, she chose the virtuosic and effective duet with the timpani by Busoni. This Brahms sounded beautifully silvery and not as romantically sumptuous as many other interpretations, yet the Adagio was also played with a blossoming tone, and accompanied sensitively and with the necessary nobility by the Dortmund Philharmonic.

A rarity (“Kaprys pol-ski”) by Grazyna Bacewicz was the first encore, the second, of course, a Paganini Caprice, which has been particularly dear to Francesca Dege since she was the youngest participant in the Paganini Competition in 2008.

After the intermission came another pinnacle of Romanticism – with a renowned specialist on the podium. The American Kenneth Woods is the artistic director of the Elgar Festival in Worcester, England. He presented the “Enigma Variations” with wonderful contrasts, letting the Dortmund Philharmonic revel in rich, at times turbulent sounds, effectively building up the movements and revealing both the delicate and the furious sides of this musical puzzle. And at the end, “Pomp and Circumstance” peeked around the corner.

<fb:like href="https://kennethwoods.net/blog1/2026/03/02/dortmunder-philharmoniker-concert-review-julia-gass-ruhr-nachrichten/" send="false" layout="box_count" width="450" show_faces="true" font="arial" action="like" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

By Julia Gaß Dortmund.
