Re-reading this, I\u2019m amazed at how much his world view (and his take on the recording industry) has stayed with me over twenty-plus years since I first became a listener. Re-reading the book, it\u2019s quite depressing just how little American culture has moved forward in that time<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From the chapter entitled \u201cFailure\u201d from <u>The Real Frank Zappa Book <\/u>(published 1989), which Frank described as \u201ca few excerpts from my own personal collection of crumbled dreams\u201d-<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next document explains the meeting mentioned above at Rothschild Venture Capital, led in the long-forgotten past, when CD\u2019s weren\u2019t even on the market\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA PROPOSAL FOR A SYSTEM TO REPLACE PHONOGRAPH RECORD MERCHANDISING<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrdinary phonograph record merchandising as it exists today is a stupid process which concerns itself essentially with moving <strong>pieces of plastic,<\/strong> wrapped in <strong>pieces of cardboard<\/strong>, from one location to another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese objects, in quantity, are heavy and expensive to ship. The manufacturing process is complicated and crude\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bulk of the promotional effort at every record company today is expended on NEW MATERIAL\u2026. the latest and greatest of whatever the cocaine-tweezed r**-****ers decide to inflict on everyone else this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore often than not, these \u2018aesthetic decisions\u2019 result in mountains of useless vinyl\/cardboard artefacts which cannot be sold at any price, and are therefore returned for disposal and recycling.
