One might be tempted to think that he’s taking it a bit easier after well-publicised health problems. After all, most conductors areprone to slimming down their rep lists as their careers evolve beyond a certain “learn everything” stage.

But then you would look at what is included in that 91 works. A mountain of premieres by a wide range of mostly American leading composers, paired with rarely heard oddities like the Korngold Cello Concerto, Waxman Tristan Fantasy and Rozsa Spellbound Concerto.

There are also Leonard’s mainstays- Prokofiev 5 has been a mainstay of his repertoire, and his interpretation a mainstay of the industry, for over 30 years. This year he’s conducted all of Rachmaninoff’s symphonies, Isle of the Dead and much of the concertante music for piano. Amd, as always, Leonard’s commitment to the rich tradition of tonal American symphonists like Piston, Schuman, Barber and Copland is readily manifest. Where would the music of Piston and Schuman be without his advocacy?

Like Paavo, Leonard also seems to like to pick a work or two as party piece of the year- Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique was something he did with several orchestras in 2010.

As in past years, I think of the regularly checked Reports in this series, Leonard’s 2010 Repertoire is the list that would be the toughest for any of us “normal” conductors to step in and cover. I’ve conducted 45 of the 91 works n his list- whether I could learn the others in one year is a question I hesitate to answer.

Leonard Slatkin

2010 Repertoire Report

ADAMS: Violin Concerto

BARBER: Capricorn Concerto

BARBER: Cello Concerto

BARBER: Symphony No. 1

BATES: Liquid Interface

BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 3, “Eroica”

BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 8

BERLIOZ: Le Corsaire

BRAHMS: Symphony No. 2

BERLIOZ: Roman Carnival Overture

BERLIOZ: Symphony Fantastique

BERNSTEIN: Symphonic Suite from On the Waterfront

BERNSTEIN: Three Dance Episodes from “On the Town”

BERNSTEIN: Symphonic Dances from “West Side Story”

BRAHMS: Symphony No. 1

BRUCH: Violin Concerto No. 1

CHILDS: Concerto for Violin (World Premiere)

COPLAND: Suite from Appalachian Spring

CORIGLIANO: Pied Piper Fantasy (DSO Premiere)

DANIELPOUR: Pastime

DEBUSSY: Afternoon of a Faun

DOPPLER: Rigoletto Fantasie

DVORÁK: Symphony No. 6

DVORAK: Symphony No. 7

DVORÁK: Symphony No. 9, “From the New World”

ELGAR: Violin Concerto

GERSHWIN: Piano Concerto in F

GERSHWIN: An American in Paris

HAYDN: Creation (excerpt)

HIGDON: Violin Concerto (DSO Premiere)

HOLST: The Planets

HOSOKAWA: Sternenlose Nacht

KORNGOLD: Cello Concerto

LEE: Beyond Rivers of Vision (DSO Premiere)

LISCHKA: Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Orchestra

LISZT: Piano Concerto No. 1

McTEE: Double Play (World Premiere)

McTEE: Tempus Fugit

McTEE: Symphony No. 1: Ballet for Orchestra

MENNIN: Concertato for Orchestra, “Moby Dick”

MERCADANTE: Flute Concerto in e minor

MOZART: Flute Concerto No. 2

MOZART: Symphony No. 35, “Haffner”

MUSSORGSKY: Pictures at an Exhibition

PART: Fratres

PISTON: Incredible Flutist Suite

PROKOFIEV: Classical Symphony

PROKOFIEV: Piano Concerto No. 3

PROKOFIEV: Violin Concerto No. 2

PROKOFIEV: Symphony No. 5

PURCELL: Chacony in G (Britten)

RABAUD: La Procession Nocturne

RACHMANINOFF: Piano Concerto No. 1

RACHMANINOFF: Piano Concerto No. 3

RACHMANINOFF: Variations on a Theme of Paganini

RACHMANINOFF: The Isle of the Dead

RACHMANINOFF: Symphony No. 1

RACHMANINOFF: Symphony No. 2

RACHMANINOFF: Symphony No. 3

RACHMANINOFF: Vocalise

RAVEL: Piano Concerto

RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: Antar

ROSAMOND & JOHNSON: Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing

ROSSINI: Overture to “La Gazza Ladra”

ROZSA: Spellbound Concerto

RUIZ: Nebula

STEPHEN RUSH: Tango Symphony (World Premiere)

SAINT-SAENS: Cello Concerto

SHCHEDRIN: Oboe Concerto

SCHUBERT: Symphony No. 9

SCHUMAN: American Festival Overture

SCHUMAN: Circus Overture: Side Show

SCHUMAN: Violin Concerto

SCHUMAN: Symphony No. 3

BRIGHT SHENG: Concerto for Orchestra: Zodiac Tales (World Premiere)

SHOSTAKOVICH: Tahiti Trot

SHOSTAKOVICH: Violin Concerto

SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 5

SMETANA: Bohemian Meadows

SPRATLAN: Life is a Dream (World Premiere)

STRAUSS: Symphonia Domestica

STRAVINSKY: Firebird (1919)

TCHAIKOVSKY: Francesca di Rimini

TCHAIKOVSKY: Piano Concerto No. 1

TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No. 6

TOWER: Concerto for Clarinet

TOWER: Fanfare, Made in America

VERDI: Overture to La Forza del Destino

WAGNER/WAXMAN: Tristan & Isolde Fantasy

WILLIAMS: Violin Concerto (DSO Premiere)

WILSON: Lumina (DSO Premiere)

91-95.
