\u201cRhenish\u201d Symphony No. 3 (Schumann)<\/p>\n

The Music:<\/strong> Schumann\u2019s free-flowing melodic depiction of the River Rhine was\u2014for his Edinburgh-based biographer and devotee Hans G\u00e1l\u2014his \u201cmost outstanding achievement in symphonic style.\u201d G\u00e1l\u2019s own Third Symphony of 1952 is a real discovery: confident, rich music in the late Romantic idiom that has bags of souls and the residue of a genuine expressive thirst.<\/p>\n

The Performance:<\/strong> It\u2019s an obvious yet inspired decision to combine these two \u201cThirds\u201d on disc…That said, there\u2019s absolutely nothing wrong with their Rhenish, which is well-paced with a particularly effective Scherzo and some very stylish string playing. It\u2019s adventuring through the G\u00e1l, though, that brings the best from Woods and his musicians. A sense of excitement quickly creeps into the throbbing pregnancy of the first movement and the players have you hooked thereafter\u2014blossoming as an ensemble and as individuals through the works well-upholstered and contented richness.<\/p>\n

The Verdict:<\/strong> G\u00e1l is truly worth rediscovering ; Woods\u2019s recording project for Avie has intrigued and delighted me and I\u2019m only left wanting more. If you like late Romantic orchestral music with a Viennese accent, don\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n
