face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Electric Theatre 23rd June\u00a0<\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\" \/><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\" \/><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">One of my earliest memories from the days when I first played in a Youth Orchestra is being involved in a performance of Beethoven\u2019s Coriolan Overture\u2026\u2026my first Beethoven!\u00a0 It was very thrilling and time has not dulled the impact of this wonderful music.<\/font><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">And so when I heard the Surrey Mozart Players in the Electric Theatre on June 23rd playing this very great music, memories flooded back.\u00a0<\/font><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/span><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"> <\/span><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">It is such a fine piece and I never tire of it.\u00a0 Their powerful attack on those sustained unison chords gave the concert a wonderfully vibrant launch.\u00a0<\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The lives of Beethoven and Robert Schumann just overlap, but their worlds were widely different.\u00a0 The toughness and raw power of Beethoven are miles away from the refined romanticism of the \u2018cello concerto by Schumann.\u00a0<\/font><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Saturday\u2019s soloist was the remarkable young cellist, Gemma Rosefield.\u00a0 She has a beautiful sound and a fine technique- in short, well equipped to give life to this beautiful concerto.\u00a0 The threatening skies that dominate Coriolan soon broke into the sunshine of the concerto\u2019s opening bars\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.beguiling, warm, inviting.<\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Although the concerto falls into three sections, the serene calm that informs so much of this music gives little clue to the terrible mental problems that Schumann was facing.\u00a0 The last section is more passionate by nature but Kenneth Woods, the orchestra and the soloist never allowed roughness to intrude\u2026\u2026.the delicacy and warmth remained.<\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Then a remarkable finale to the evening: Shostakovich\u2019s Chamber Symphony op 73a\u2026.an arrangement\u00a0of his 3rd String Quartet.\u00a0 The Surrey Mozart Players produced a very moving performance of this very difficult work.\u00a0 It is also very great music and the sheer quality of it was fully conveyed to us.\u00a0 It has a huge range of moods from the perky to the much more threatening and darker coloured.\u00a0 The cataclysmic nature of the third movement certainly produced an effect I think not experienced by the Electric Theatre ever before.<\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">The last moments of the symphony are most affecting\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026the little peasant song of the first movement recurs, slightly changed, perhaps even a little damaged, but the people it seems are resigned to smile through their tears.\u00a0 This performance was a\u00a0triumph. Citizens of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Guildford<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">, applaud this orchestra, it is a most treasured possession, with its inspiring Kenneth Woods, leading them on a daring and exciting journey.\u00a0 We should be very proud to have such an ensemble in our midst.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"> <\/span><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\" \/><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\" \/><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">G F\u00a0<\/font><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" \/><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/p>\n<p \/><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p \/><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 0;float:none;height:100px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/kennethwoods.net\/blog1\/2007\/06\/28\/concert-review-surrey-mozart-players-june-23-2007\/\" send=\"false\" layout=\"box_count\" width=\"450\" show_faces=\"true\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Surrey Advertiser-\u00a0 Surrey Mozart Players Concert.
