She has been one three co-principal horn players in the Oregon East Symphony since February of 2006. I asked her the same questions about Lessons in Listening that I asked James. \u00a0Her answers make for a great, and inspiring, read. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">KW <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">KW\u00a0 Can listening really be taught and learned? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">RS\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes, it can.\u00a0 My ear, over time, has learned how to hear what i\u2019m looking at \u2013 most of the time, anyway.\u00a0\u00a0 And it\u2019s still constantly improving \u2013 it\u2019s always learning better and subtler ways of listening.\u00a0 I assume that since mine has, and is, everybody\u2019s ear can learn to listen. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Because it can be learnt, i believe it can be taught.\u00a0 Part of the trouble with designing the Lessons in Listening is discovering <em>how<\/em> to effectively teach listening.\u00a0 I know that, for me, the methods employed in music school (the ear training regimens, the sight-singing drills, the music identification tests, the music appreciation classes) were useless for my ear.\u00a0 It makes me wonder for how many other people they were useless, and if that might not be a reason why people dislike classical music \u2013 it\u2019s no fun sitting through a class constantly thinking \u201ci don\u2019t get this.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 I think that LInL will be a continuing experiment in listening instruction; it will likely morph according to student, with a result of teaching us how to teach listening. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">KW\u00a0 Aren\u2019t all experiences of all listeners of equal value? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">RS\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Briefly, yes and no.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Music is a temporal art \u2013 it both takes place in time, and it has a duration; thus it is a more experiential art form than painting or sculpture, and <u>anything<\/u> that <em>is experienced<\/em> <em>as a cause of listening to it<\/em> is valuable and valid, insofar as it affects the individual listener.\u00a0 Whatever that piece means to you, however it affects you, is a worthwhile experience, for you, at that time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But that initial experience of the music is fleeting, and if you seek to replicate that <em>exact experience<\/em> again, you will more than likely fail.\u00a0 In the time between listenings you will have changed, grown, lived more life; your desires and sorrows are perhaps different; it becomes impossible to hear that music the same way that you heard it before, and if you expect to, you will be disappointed.\u00a0 By limiting that music to meaning just and only what it meant to you that one time, you will grow out of it pretty quickly, and cease to listen to it.\u00a0 <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00e0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> Aside.\u00a0 Classical music is particularly tricky that way.\u00a0 The first time you hear a work it can be life-changing, earth-shattering.\u00a0 Your whole world is expanded, you see everything more clearly, you feel that your soul has never been more accurately or beautifully expressed.\u00a0 But then you expect that to happen every time, and when it doesn\u2019t you become disillusioned.\u00a0\u00a0 You come to dislike the music that was initially so powerful because every time after the first was a disappointment.\u00a0\u00a0 Pop music doesn\u2019t do that to you.\u00a0 It never moves, blows up, and reassembles your whole world in the space of 42 minutes, so you tend to have considerably fewer expectations of it.\u00a0 It makes it way easier for pop music to meet those expectations, you are less disappointed more rarely, and so you like it more. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00df<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> end of Aside.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If instead, you take the more life that you\u2019ve lived and openly approach that same music as you would a new piece, it will mean another more new different experience, but nonetheless powerful for that.\u00a0 And some of the music that was closest to you ten years ago is now light-years away, and you don\u2019t even really like it; and some of the music that five years ago you couldn\u2019t stand now speaks to you the most strongly.\u00a0 That one piece that you absolutely hated on the first hearing starts to grow on you, until it maybe becomes your new favorite.\u00a0 Open-mindedness and the willingness to grow are maybe the best traits to cultivate to get the most out of any music, and classical music especially.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So yes, all experiences of all listeners are of equal value, but rigid expectations and a dogmatic approach to the music will kill any potential real experience you might have had in favor of disappointment and boredom. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">KW\u00a0 How has your listening changed or evolved over the years? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">RS\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A lot of music used to sound the same to me \u2013 there was classical music, jazz,\u00a0and pop\/rock.\u00a0 I could tell those genres apart from each other, but within them i couldn\u2019t distinguish anyone from anyone.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Then i started to learn horn, and i\u2019d try to pick out the horns from all the rest of the music.\u00a0 It was mainly the differences in horn lines that introduced me to some of the differences in music in general.\u00a0 I think listening exclusively to your own instrument is a phase that all musicians go through, and some never get out of.\u00a0\u00a0 It helps you to get a handle on an otherwise overwhelmingly large piece of music.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 My ideas of what sounds good and what doesn\u2019t have also changed over time.\u00a0 When i was a child i loved anything slow, lyrical, and either minor or modal.\u00a0 I hated major \u2013 i thought it sounded dumb (i still kind of think that, actually).\u00a0 I liked people to play prettily, i enjoyed some refinement in the sound.\u00a0 I still do, but now i also enjoy some really raucous playing.\u00a0 I love to hear lots of fire and energy in a performance, even if it means some sloppiness or mistakes.\u00a0 I used to think that all the right notes in all the right places means a great performance.\u00a0 I now think that all the right notes in all the right places can mean a lack-luster, very safe, very boring performance.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In more general terms, i have found that i go through listening phases.\u00a0 In my junior year of high school i would listen to Tuckwell\u2019s two disc horn concerto set two or three times a day.\u00a0 In college i listened to Shostakovich 5 and 9 on loop for four or five hours a day for two years, often while staring at the ceiling.\u00a0 Then it was Tchaikovsky 4, 5 and 6.\u00a0 Then it was ethnic Bulgarian music.\u00a0 Then it was Debussy\u2019s La Mer, L\u2019Apres-Midi D\u2019Un Faun, and Danses Sacre et Profun.\u00a0 Then\u00a0 Prokofieff\u2019s Peter and the Wolf, Tales of an Old Grandmother, and Saint-Saens\u2019 Carnival of the Animals.\u00a0 Lately it\u2019s been whatever my roommates turn on.\u00a0 I have found that, for me, a long slow digestion of music is what it takes for it to really stick with me.\u00a0 Besides, it\u2019s what i enjoy the most.\u00a0 I would rather be obsessed by a piece for months upon months than just flit through lots of works by lots of composers.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">KW\u00a0 What happens in a lesson? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">RS\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Some preparatory visiting (including some light refreshment), probably done with some music on in the background \u2013 turned up enough to hear it if you listen to it, and down enough to hear people if you are listening to the conversation.\u00a0 I think we might ask them after some several minutes of chatting if they noticed the music, if they like it, if they know it, etc.\u00a0 Perhaps spin out some conversation on that.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019d like to find out from every participant if they have a favorite composer (and try to determine why) \u2013 or if they at least have a composer they\u2019ve heard of.\u00a0 Anyone is welcome to bring in their own favorite recordings, or to make specific requests.\u00a0 I\u2019ll also likely ask them if there is a composer or a piece they just can\u2019t stand, and see what it is they don\u2019t like about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We\u2019ll ask if they\u2019ve ever played an instrument; if so which; and can they still identify its sound.\u00a0 We might begin any in-depth listening with just picking out when\/what that instrument is playing.\u00a0 As i mentioned, i think listening exclusively to your own instrument can give you a handle on a perhaps otherwise unapproachable piece.\u00a0 For that reason alone, i think it might help if they\u2019ve had some sort of instrumental\/vocal training.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span seeing if they liked it or not.\u00a0 Then perhaps trying to figure out <em>why<\/em> they liked or disliked it.\u00a0 Since that can be a difficult question to answer, we might ask them how it made them feel, or what, specifically, caught their attention.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to make it flexible enough that anyone could say \u201cWait!\u00a0 I want to hear more of that!\u201d or \u201cThis music is irritating.
