At the completion of the<br \/>\nInstitute, he led the National Symphony Orchestra in a debut concert, drawing<br \/>\ngreat critical acclaim and a return invitation from the NSO. In the spring of 2000,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/font><strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">David Zinman <\/span><\/font><\/strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">selected Kenneth Woods from a pool of over 200 applicants to be<br \/>\na fellow in the inaugural class of the <\/span><\/font><strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">American Academy of Conducting at<br \/>\nAspen.<\/span><\/font><\/strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\"> Toronto Symphony Music Director <\/span><\/font><strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">Peter Oundjian<\/span><\/font><\/strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\"> has praised Woods as<br \/>\n<\/span><\/font><strong><em><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">\u201ca conductor with true vision and purpose. He has a most fluid and clear style<br \/>\nand an excellent command on the podium\u2026 a most complete musician.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/font><\/em><\/strong><strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">Kenneth Woods<\/span><\/font><\/strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\"> has conducted critically praised productions of operas from<br \/>\nBritten to Puccini, and ballet scores as diverse as Giselle, the Nutcracker and<br \/>\nFirebird. Woods\u2019 work as an active proponent of contemporary music includes<br \/>\ncollaborations with composers including <\/span><\/font><strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">John Corigliano, Krystopf Penderecki,<br \/>\nPeter Lieberson and Oliver Knussen.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/font><\/strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">As music director of the Oregon East Symphony since 2000, he has transformed<br \/>\na tiny orchestra in a remote, rural area into possibly the most talked-about<br \/>\norchestra in the Pacific Northwest, who have won universal praise for their<br \/>\nongoing <\/span><\/font><strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">Mahler cycle <\/span><\/font><\/strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">and their innovative youth programs. In the spring of 2007,<br \/>\nthe OES made national news when their offices and music library were burned to<br \/>\nthe ground in a devastating fire. Despite the catastrophic losses, Woods initiated<br \/>\na fire recovery campaign on the web that mean the orchestra was able to<br \/>\ncomplete its season in the black.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005 he was invited by the <\/span><\/font><strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">Rose City Chamber Orchestra<\/span><\/font><\/strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\"> to start a new<br \/>\ninternational workshop for young conductors, which now attracts top emerging<br \/>\nconducting talents from Korea, Japan, Germany, Spain, Argentina, Canada and<br \/>\nthe UK as well as the USA.<\/p>\n<p>As a cellist he has been recipient of the <\/span><\/font><strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">Aspen Fellowship<\/span><\/font><\/strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\"> (Mr. Woods has<br \/>\nreceived the Aspen Fellowship as both a cellist and conductor), the <\/span><\/font><strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">Dale Gilbert<br \/>\nAward<\/span><\/font><\/strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\"> (the only musician to win this award in consecutive years), the <\/span><\/font><strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">Strelow<br \/>\nQuartet Fellowship<\/span><\/font><\/strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">, the <\/span><\/font><strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">National Endowment for the Arts Rural Residency<br \/>\nGrant <\/span><\/font><\/strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">and has recorded and toured extensively as soloist and chamber<br \/>\nmusician. He has played chamber music with members of the <\/span><\/font><strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">Chamber Music<br \/>\nSociety of Lincoln Center, the Smithsonian Chamber Players, the Cincinnati,<br \/>\nChicago and Toronto symphonies, and the Minnesota, Gewandhaus and<br \/>\nConcertgebow<\/span><\/font><\/strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\"> orchestras. He was founding cellist of the National Endowment<br \/>\nfor the Arts recognized Taliesin Trio, and of the Masala Quartet, who have<br \/>\nrecorded for Vienna Modern Masters and appeared at festivals and concert<br \/>\nseries\u2019 in the US and Europe<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Woods pursued his advanced conducting studies at the<\/span><\/font><strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\"> University of<br \/>\nCincinnati College-Conservatory of Music<\/span><\/font><\/strong><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px\">, and also studied at leading summer<br \/>\ninstitutes and workshops around the world.
