Structurally it\u2019s more tightly drawn \u2013 no dancing mountains here \u2013 and in that sense G\u00e1l\u2019s musical language tends to look backwards more than it does forward. That\u2019s not a criticism, merely a marker, for it\u2019s clear this music inhabits a strange, half-lit world between the warm Romanticism of the 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century and the cooler climes of the 20<sup>th<\/sup>. That said, the gloaming is occasionally pierced with shafts of pure, unexpected loveliness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">This band plays with admirable finesse and concentration, and the recording is clean and well focused. G\u00e1l\u2019s textures \u2013 often spare, but never emaciated \u2013 are alleviated somewhat by the greater amplitude and more rhythmically alert A<em>llegro energico<\/em>. At times there\u2019s a hint of Mahler in dancerly mode, but what strikes one most forcibly is G\u00e1l\u2019s propensity for periods of lucence and chamber-like intensity. It\u2019s a persuasive mix, and there are no\u00a0<em>longueurs<\/em>\u00a0to speak of. As for that gorgeous\u00a0<em>Adagio<\/em>, with its haunting cello line at the outset, it\u2019s startling in its blend of radiance and gravitas.
