You gave because you knew someone had to.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that your generosity, your commitment and your sense of urgency has paid off. The disc is out, the series is complete. For the first time, there is an integral set of the symphonies of Hans G\u00e1l all performed by the same orchestra and conductor. Thanks to your support, we were also able to deliver the first live cycle of these important works in history, most of which had not been played in over thirty years. We&#8217;ve also completed a Schumann cycle that we think is <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.indystar.com\/upstage\/2011\/08\/16\/revelatory-schumann-from-orchestra-of-the-swan\/\" target=\"_blank\">a really exciting addition to the discography<\/a>&#8211; one that \u00a0is both grounded in the latest scholarship about Schumann&#8217;s life and music, and \u00a0fresh and full of life, thanks to the tireless efforts of my colleagues in the orchestra<\/p>\n<p>This project has helped the music of Hans G\u00e1l reach the ears of countless new listeners around the world through broadcasts on <a href=\"http:\/\/kennethwoods.net\/blog1\/2012\/04\/28\/bobby-and-hans-vol-2-on-bbc-radio-3s-cd-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">BBC Radio 3<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/kennethwoods.net\/blog1\/2012\/05\/22\/performance-today-may-24-2012-orchestra-of-the-swan-plays-gal-symphony-no-4-in-concert\/\" target=\"_blank\">Performance Today<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/deceptivecadence\/2011\/07\/23\/138618617\/poulenc-palestrina-and-two-by-fours-new-classical-albums\" target=\"_blank\">NPR\u2019s All Things Considered<\/a>. The music has been discussed for the first time in national newspapers in the US and UK, including the <a href=\"http:\/\/kennethwoods.net\/blog1\/2012\/06\/02\/cd-review-sunday-new-york-times-on-bobby-and-hans-vol-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sunday New York Times<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/music\/little-known-composers-get-their-due-in-the-studio-if-not-the-concert-hall\/2012\/08\/09\/d7b5c1c2-e0b6-11e1-8fc5-a7dcf1fc161d_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/kennethwoods.net\/blog1\/2012\/04\/09\/cd-review-saturday-telegraph-on-bobby-and-hans-vol-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Saturday Telegraph<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/kennethwoods.net\/blog1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Gal-in-Guardian-Weekly.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Guardian<\/a>. We&#8217;ve been a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gramophone.co.uk\/review\/gal-schumann-symphonies\" target=\"_blank\">Gramophone Editor&#8217;s Choice,<\/a> and have been on several &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/iowapublicradio.org\/post\/classical-cds-year-2013\" target=\"_blank\">best of the year<\/a>&#8221; lists.<\/p>\n<p>Later this spring, Hans G\u00e1l will be featured for the first time on BBC Radio 3\u2019s \u201cComposer of the Week\u201d. It\u2019s currently scheduled for May 5<sup>th<\/sup>-9<sup>th<\/sup>, but check your listings closer to the time. This is a huge breakthrough for G\u00e1l,\u00a0and it wouldn\u2019t have happened without this project or without your active support.<\/p>\n<p>All of this, however, is<strong> <i>a beginning, not an end<\/i><\/strong>. I hope you will continue to help us to make the most of what we\u2019ve all invested in the project. First- not to state the obvious, but <b><i>now would be a great time to <\/i><\/b><strong><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hans-G%C3%A1l-Symphony-No-Schumann\/dp\/B00IK9I154\/\" target=\"_blank\">sell a few CDs<\/a><\/i><\/strong>. Please tell your friends about the disc in person or via Facebook and Twitter. Word of mouth counts for so much today, and early momentum is vitally important for getting the media interested in spreading the word about any new CD.<\/p>\n<p>We very much want to see Hans G\u00e1l\u2019s music programmed at international festivals, particularly the Proms.<\/p>\n<p>Please consider writing a nice, positive letter to:<\/p>\n<p>Office of Mr. Roger Wright,<br \/>\nController BBC Radio 3<br \/>\nDirector BBC Proms,<br \/>\nBroadcasting House,<br \/>\nPortland Place<br \/>\nLondonW1B 1DJ<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps you can articulate to Mr Wright why you supported this project, what you admire about the music and why you think it is important that it is featured at the Proms. Perhaps you can also explain why you think this music has the potential to engage a large audience. Remember, be constructive and positive and personal- share your passion for the music and we&#8217;ll be more likely to get great results.<\/p>\n<p>Please also consider writing to your local orchestras, festivals and presenters. People really do read these things and try to take them in to account when planning, especially if they can sense that there is a buzz around an idea or a composer.<\/p>\n<p>And, of course, if you think there is someone that one of us at team G\u00e1l should be in touch with, please email me at <a href=\"mailto:ken@kennethwoods.net\">ken@kennethwoods.net<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, what\u2019s next on the recording front? There are several important projects in the works. Cellist<a href=\"http:\/\/www.matthewsharp.net\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Matthew Sharp<\/a> is putting together a very interesting project to record G\u00e1l\u2019s Cello Concertino alongside several other concertos by composers of the same generation. <a href=\"http:\/\/ensemble-epomeo.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ensemble Epomeo<\/a>, who recorded the complete G\u00e1l String Trios last year, are planning to record the two late G\u00e1l quintets (his Viola Quintet and Clarinet Quintet) in 2016, and also hope to record his piano quartets. On the orchestral front, there is still much to be done- there are some wonderful string orchestra pieces that we hope to record soon, as well as some lovely chamber orchestra works. More ambitious, however, is the plan to record G\u00e1l\u2019s very important major choral\/orchestral works De Profundis and Lebenskreise, and eventually the operas.
