Schoenberg)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">Das Lied von der Erde (arr. Schoenberg\/Riehn)<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #494949;\"><em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">At the end of the Great War, Vienna was a defeated city and Mahler\u2019s disciple, Arnold Schoenberg created a Society for Private Musical Performance to revive musical life. The society did not have sufficient funds, so ensemble transcriptions of orchestral works were often made. Schoenberg reduced Mahler\u2019s\u00a0<strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">Songs of a Wayfarer<\/strong>\u00a0for a concert in 1920, restoring the intimacy of the original piano version, while preserving many colours found in its later orchestral score. He also began arranging\u00a0<strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">The Song of the Earth<\/strong>\u00a0for the society in 1921, but did not progress beyond the first song, The sketches lay untouched until 1983, when the conductor\u00a0<strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">Rainer Riehn<\/strong>\u00a0completed them. Because much of Mahler\u2019s score has the delicacy of chamber music, surprisingly little is lost in these skilled arrangements. The aching loveliness of Die\u00a0zwei blauen Augen has seldom been so feelingly caught, those dragging rhythms so well judged. Crowning it all is Stout\u2019s fine-spun singing; really, this is a voice I would travel many miles to hear. I\u2019ve added him to my list of singers to watch. And if that\u2019s not enough, the beautifully-turned orchestral coda has a sustained, heart-stopping delicacy I\u2019ve rarely encountered in this oft-played song\u2026 supremely well-played and well-sung\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">January 2012-<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #f33f3f;\" href=\"http:\/\/klacknermusic.wordpress.com\/2012\/01\/02\/the-2011-everything-but-the-music-awards-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Everything but the Music \u201cBest Recording of 2011<\/a>&#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cBoth performances are powerful; quite frankly I don\u2019t find them to be the kind of thing that you pull out for listening while cooking or listening for pleasure. The\u00a0<em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">Das Lied<\/em>\u00a0in particular commands 100% attention, but the emotional impact is pretty profound.
