I recently ran into an old friend and colleague, Edwin Outwater, who was in Cardiff for a few days to work with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. We’ve known each other since the early days of our conducting lives as students and later staff conductors at the Round Top festival. How funny that so many years later, and 5000 miles away, we’d be conducting the same orchestra on consecutive days. Edwin’s a fine musician, who is doing exciting work all over the world.
It was nice to find out that Edwin, who if I remember correctly has an English degree from Harvard, is now blogging. I’m a bit sad not to be the world’s only blogging conductor any more, but I’m glad that it’s a good musician and writer who’s joined the field. I think anything we can do as conductors to foster communication between conductors and musicians and musicians, conductors and audiences is a very, very good thing.
