Gál

Violin Concerto, Triptych, Concertino for Violin and Strings

Annette-Barbara Vogel, Northern Sinfonia/Kenneth Woods

***** (Five stars)

One of  a generation of native-born refugees from Nazi-dominated Austria in the 1930’s, Hans Gál spent the rest of his life in Edinburgh. There he became better known as a teacher, editor and writer rather than the fine composer he evidently was. These three works are rooted in the Austro-German tradition with the slightest modern twinge; they make for a pleasing listen with Vogel’s strong and beautiful playing matched by the excellent accompaniments. The Violin Concerto, composed during Gál’s exile is a particularly fine creation. MH
