Gramophone Magazine devotes a whole page to their review of Bobby and Hans vol. 1 in the September issue, now on newsstands. Be sure to pick up a copy- my man Edward Elgar is on the cover, what could be better? There is also a short interview that I did with reviews editor Andrew Mellor a few weeks ago (you can read Andrew’s on thoughts about the disc from Classic FM Magazine here). Click on the images below to blow them up to full size. (Review is by Guy Rickards, who also reviewed the Gal Triptych disc)
Dear Ken:
I just listened to your recording of Gál’s Violin Concerto. All I can say is that you have discovered a masterpiece! I love it! Your performance does the piece great justice as well, and I love your interpretation. I am looking forward to knowing the other works of Gál. Thanks for introducing us to a 20th century master who is finally receiving the recognition he deserves.
My next question: where does one purchase or rent these scores?
Musically yours,
Christopher Stanichar
(Director of Orchestras at Augustana Orchestra, and Music Director of South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra)
Dear Christopher
It’s great to hear from you! It’s been too long.
I’m so glad you got the Gal- I do love it, and his music tends to maintain a very, very consistently high standard.
The best resource for rental information is the hansgal.com website. Each piece has the publisher listed. When in doubt, email the Gal Society, who can help track down things that are harder to find. Fortunately, most things are available with a bit of hunting. Boosey and Breitkopf are the main publishers, but it’s all a bit random.
Thanks again for the comment- best of luck with your upcoming season!
Ken
