Flute dbl Alto flue. Oboe dbl Cor anglais. Clarinet dbl Bass Cl. Percussion (sleighbells). Harmonium. Piano. 5 solo strings (Vn 1. Vn 2, Va. Vc. Cb.). Voice.
This arrangement uses the same forces as Erwin Stein’s reduced orchestration of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony (albeit with more wind doublings). There is also a version available for the same slightly larger forces used by Klaus Simon in his reduction: fl/ob/cl/bn/hn/perc/harm/pno/sop/strings 6.5.4.4.2

This work is an arrangement of the second movement of Schubert’s String Quartet in D minor for salon orchestra, which elides seamlessly into Schubert’s Lied Der Tod und das Mädchen, from which the string quartet also takes its name.
