Description
Mahler’s arrangement of Schubert’s Death and the Maiden String Quartet has become a favourite of string orchestras and audiences worldwide since its rediscovery over 40 years ago. However, Mahler only conducted the second movement of the work, and an examination of Mahler’s score in the British Library shows that the other three movements appear to be in a much less complete state, with far fewer annotations. This new edition offers conductors and orchestras a version that incorporates a lifetime’s experience in conducting Mahler’s music and his arrangements that is probably more representative of what Mahler would have done had he had the opportunity to perform the complete work. All changes and ossias are clearly marked. The score has also been checked against the modern Schubert Ausgabe Urtext edition.
