A new five-star review in Musical Opinion from Guy Rickards for the 2nd, 10th and 12th Symphonies of Christopher Gunning with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales on Signum Records.

“The Second’s journey through alternately dark and lighter expressive landscapes, with a mainly hushed central slow movement, is both haunting and powerful.”

“The [12th] Symphony is cast in two movements, a difficult format to balance, of which there are few truly convincing examples,…. but Gunning pulls it off with disarming ease.”

“The performances of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales sound splendid throughout, not just thoroughly well-prepared and virtuosic, but full of relish and enjoyment also. I suspect this may be at least partly due to the committed advocacy of conductor Kenneth Woods, who not only knows a good thing when he hears it, but is able to communicate it to the orchestra in front of him. This is nowhere more evident than in the most compelling composition of the three, the single-span Tenth Symphony, a multi-faceted and cogently argued work… Signum’s sound is superlative and this is a disc I have been playing again and again (and will continue to return to). Strongly recommended.”
